M.J. Kane stumbled
into writing. An avid reader, this once stay-at-home mom never lost the
overactive imagination of an only child. As an adult she made up stories,
though never shared them, to keep herself entertained. It wasn’t until
surviving a traumatic medical incident in 2006 that she found a reason to let
the characters inhabiting her imagination free. Upon the suggestion
of her husband, she commandeered his laptop and allowed the characters to take
life. It was that, or look over her shoulder for men caring a purple strait
jacket. And the rest, as they say, is history.

No longer a television addict, if M.J.
isn’t reading a book by one of her favorite authors, she’s battling with her
creative muse to balance writing and being a wife and mother. She resides in
the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia with her high school sweetheart, four wonderful
children, and four pit bulls. During the day, MJ is a librarian, in her spare
time she is director of a local writer’s group, or online connecting with
readers and other authors. Other activities she enjoys include: creating custom
floral arrangements, assisting her children in their creative pursuits of music
and art, and supporting her husband’s music production business, 3D Sounds.

MJ’s debut novel, A Heart Not Easily
Broken, Book one of the Butterfly Memoirs, became an instant Amazon
Bestseller in Multicultural Romance and African-American Literature and Fiction
within hours of publication. It has also spent time on the African-American
Women’s Fiction and African-American Romance Bestsellers lists.

Okay, confessions time. First off, I work with M.J. And (she doesn't know this yet) I've always been nervous to read books by people I now just because what do you say if you don't like it? How do you not hurt their feelings? How do you just, not like it?
Thankfully, I did NOT have that problem with Nobody's Business! From the beginning I was enchanted and may have stayed up too late reading the book lol I've been messaging M.J. little comments here and there as I've been reading. I wish I could share them with you, but I don't want to ruin the story for you! Instead, I want you to read the book. And then go back and read her other novels as well :D

And back to knowing the author: it has been fun reading and knowing and catching little details of our real life and work life that make their way into the story. It is soooo frikking cool.

Second confession time. This book was just a little hard for me to read at first. I had my own dealings with infidelity in a marriage, (and this blog suffered as a result) but I powered through it and I am super glad I did. The characters felt real and I was able to connect with them,

Have you ever thought of trying any other genre
writing-like Sci-Fi romance? Why or why not?

Before I started
writing, my favorite books to read were from the Sci-Fi genre. You’d think that
once I started writing that would be what I dug into. But nope, my characters
didn’t want that life. Instead they wanted to focus on reality. But, now that I
have that down, I have thought about dabbling in another genre. I’ve had some
ideas about a Sci-Fi-ish type novel, but haven’t had time to invest in it just
yet. But, who knows what the future holds?

Do you have any writing brain food?

My favorite go-to snacks are things I can pop in my mouth and suck
on, like Skittles, Red Hots, or Lemon Heads. I tried Pixi Sticks, but they are
too distracting, it takes work to keep opening the packages and keeps me from
typing. I prefer stuff I can just pop in there and keep it moving!

If you could have lunch with any of your
characters, which one would it be and why?

If I could have lunch
with any of the characters of Nobody’s Business, as handsome as Trevon Campbell
is, I would love to hang out with Kai Malone and find out what motivated her to
become a firefighter. As a kid, I grew up around a firehouse because my father
was a fire chief. It never crossed my mind to follow in his line of work, and I
applaud any woman who has decided to dedicate her life to saving others.

If you could turn the tables and ask the
interviewer a question, what would you ask, and why?

Hmm, that’s a good one!
I guess it would be, since you like to read and write reviews, have you ever
given thought to writing a book?

And you know I have to ask...I know you
have something similar, but would you ever write a novel about a librarian?
Lord knows you would have plenty of material! Lol

The idea of writing a
book about a librarian came to mind after I stared working at the library. It
is my opinion that librarians are misunderstood. Not everyone is the
eyeglass-wearing, hair pinned up, telling everyone to be quiet librarian. I
think librarians these days are more hip to what’s going on because you have to
be in order to keep up with technology. Hmm…maybe I could write a book about
the ‘librarian’ during the day turned stripper at night? LOL!!! Maybe not, that
one may not go over too well. :)

What has been the biggest source of inspiration for you as a writer?

My inspiration has come
in various forms. For my characters and stories, it’s all about life
experiences and ‘what if?’ scenarios. What keeps me writing is the love I have
for my characters and how their stories touch my heart and make me want to
share them with others. Why I still write is for my personal sanity, because if
I put my pen down and gave up today, my characters would keep talking anyway.
And lastly, it’s my readers who send me unexpected messages on Facebook or
Twitter to say how much they loved one of my stories, or how much a characters
decisions reminded them of their past or opened their eyes to something new.
How could I stop writing after that?

Title: A Want So Wicked
Author: Suzanne Young
Pub Date: June 2012
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 282

From GoodReads:
Elise is a normal seventeen-year-old girl until the day she wakes up in a desert park, with no idea who she is.

After
that episode, her life takes a bizarre turn. She’s experiencing
unexpected flashes of insight into people’s lives—people she’s never met
before. Strangers frighten her with warnings about the approaching
Shadows. And although Elise has never had a boyfriend, she suddenly
finds herself torn between two handsome but very different young men:
Abe, the charming bad boy whose effect on her both seduces and frightens
her, and the mysterious Harlin, who’s new to town but with whom Elise
feels an urgent, elemental connection—almost as if they are soul mates.

Now
Elise begins to question everything about her life. Why do these guys
both want her so desperately? What are the Shadows? Why does the name
Charlotte inspire a terrifying familiarity? And who is Elise, really?

When I first read A Need So Beautiful, I was overcome with a sense of peace. It was one of those rare books that broadcasted its feelings onto me. I felt content and happy-just as if a Forgotten was nearby and fulfilled their Need. A Want So Wicked was a little bit different. For much of the book, I had moments of shock, and for that I am grateful! I enjoy being surprised, even though I did guess and figure out a few things. A Want So Wicked was still beautifully written. Yet it was so different.

Elise is figuring things out and as readers we get to experience all of her emotions with her. While there wasn't as much Need-fulfilling as was in ANSB, it was still interesting with some twists and turns along the way.

The Love Triangle:
This was a good one and it worked extremely well for the story. I am also happy to report that not only did it not piss me off but I am happy with the outcome.

All in all, AWSW was a wonderful book about a pastor's daughter who thinks she is losing her mind, but instead is meant to help the world. The ending hints at a third installment. Oh man, I really hope there will be a third! I'm not ready to give up this story. There is still so much for us to learn!

(And coming in November we have a novella!)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11879561986885232666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4041014871443940591.post-61280867382951197312013-08-19T09:00:00.000-04:002013-08-19T09:00:05.834-04:00Dead & the Buried ~ Kim Harrington

From GoodReads:
A haunted house, a buried mystery, and a very angry ghost make this one unforgettable thriller.

Jade
loves the house she's just moved into with her family. She doesn't even
mind being the new girl at the high school: It's a fresh start, and
there's that one guy with the dreamy blue eyes. . . . But then things
begin happening. Strange, otherworldly things. Jade's little brother
claims to see a glimmering girl in his room. Jade's jewelry gets moved
around, as if by an invisible hand. Kids at school whisper behind her
back like they know something she doesn't.

Soon, Jade must face
an impossible fact: that her perfect house is haunted. Haunted by a
ghost who's seeking not just vengeance, but the truth. The ghost of a
girl who ruled Jade's school — until her untimely death last year. It's
up to Jade to put the pieces together before her own life is at stake.
As Jade investigates the mystery, she discovers that her new friends in
town have more than a few deep, dark secrets. But is one of them a
murderer?

THE BOOK

While still paranormal-ish, D&B was a little different from the world of Clarity Fern. In this world, Jade is dealing with a ghost that she cannot see. A ghost who is, well, I'll just say it-a bitch. She was the popular girl at school and now she is the popular girl in her death. Jade has to figure out who killed her before Jade's little brother dies as a result.

MY THOUGHTS

I
mentioned in my previous post, but I will say it again: I am addicted
to Kim Harrington's writing! Something happens to me when I start
reading and I cannot put the book down! So of course The Dead and the
Buried was no different.

I enjoyed the characters in this book, especially Jade. She was just a normal girl trying to fit in. Well as normal as you can be while being the new girl who lives in a haunted house. One of my favorite aspects to Jade was that she was in to stones. Once upon a time I used to know all the special properties of gemstones. Okay I still remember a few, amethyst being my absolute favorite. This was just unique that it helped me connect to Jade on so many more levels.

And what is a teen book without a love interest? Definitely had that in here. And it worked; it wasn't far-fetched or ridiculous or anything.

Kayla. What to say about Kayla? Well, she is dead. We learn and discover Kayla through passages of her diary that are interspersed throughout the book. And from reading the diary passages, it is obvious who the killer is. I was a bit let down of how predictable it was, oh well though I still enjoyed it! And even in death, Kayla was still a bitch! I loved it!

Okay so that is that. Hope you enjoy it!
First up is Perception, the sequel to Clarity. When I read Clarity in 2012, I thought the series would only get stronger. I was absolutely right!
From GoodReads: When you can see things others can't, what do you do when someone's watching you?
Everybody
knows about Clarity "Clare" Fern. She's the psychic girl in school, the
one who can place her hands on something and see hidden visions from
the past.
Only Clare would rather not be a celebrity. She prefers hanging back, observing. Her gift is not a game to her.
But
then someone starts playing with her head . . . and heart. Messages and
gifts from a secret admirer crop up everywhere Clare turns. Could they
be from Gabriel, the gorgeous boy who gets Clare's pulse racing? Or from
Justin, Clare's hopeful ex-boyfriend who'd do anything to win her back?
One thing is certain. Clare needs to solve this mystery, and
soon. Because the messages are becoming sinister, and a girl in town has
suddenly disappeared.

Again, I was sucked back in to the world of Clare Fern. Clare whose entire family is psychic: Clare touches objects and can read their history, her brother is a medium, and her mother is a mind reader. Her family is recovering from a summer of turmoil after a girl was killed and her brother was the prime suspect. And now that school is back in session, another girl has gone missing. And this time, Clare is receiving messages from a secret admirer.

So of course, Clare begins playing detective to figure out A) the circumstances around the girl's disappearance and B) the secret admirer's identity. Is it her ex-boyfriend, the new guy she likes, or someone new?

To be honest, I played girl detective right along with Clare-I had my own list of suspects, motive, etc. Color me surprised to find out that I was wrong! Woot! I LOVE when that happens!
thing: a date for her sister's wedding. And not just any date. A hunk
who will make her fiancé rue the day he left her for her best friend.
Her drop-dead gorgeous neighbor fits the bill—even if he is a bit quirky
and never comes out during the day—and Alice has downed just enough
appletinis to ask him. But she makes it quite clear that there will be
no funny business.

Spending a week on a cruise ship full of
humans while sleeping close to his sexy next-door neighbor sounds like a
helluva bad idea to vampire Noah Thorpe. But his friends need time to
get him out of a shotgun wedding—a vampire bonding that will tie his
fate to a female vampire he's never met. And Alice's offer comes at just
the right time.

What could possibly go wrong?
A while back I had the pleasure of reading a beautiful book by Cheryl Rainfield, Scars. I also had the pleasure of speaking with Cheryl a little bit about her story, and Scars became even more beautiful. When she contacted me about a cover reveal (which I was late posting sadly) I jumped on the opportunity, and am looking forward to reading Stained. I do love the original cover and would have loved it if it could have stayed. With that said, I hope you enjoy some of the goodies Cheryl provided!

“Powerful. I raced through it, wanting to know if Sarah would find a
way to escape both her captor and her self-doubts. A real nail-biter! “

“STAINED is dark, tense and gripping; a triumph of one girl's heart,
soul and will to survive. Sarah's strength during her descent into terror kept
me reading way past bedtime! “

ABOUT
STAINED:

Seventeen-year-old
Sarah Meadows covers the walls of her bedroom with images of beautiful faces
she clips from magazines—and longs for “normal.” Born with a port-wine stain
covering half her face, all her life she’s been plagued by stares, giggles,
bullying, and disgust. Why can’t she be like Diamond, the comic-book hero she
created? Diamond would never let the insults in. That’s harder for Sarah.

But when she’s abducted on the way home from school, Sarah
is forced to uncover the courage she never knew she had. Can she look beyond
her face to find the beauty and strength she has inside, somehow becoming a
hero rather than a victim? It’s the only way Sarah will have any chance of
escaping the prison—both seen and unseen—that this deranged killer has placed around her.

From GoodReads:
Nothing is as it seems in this darkly romantic tale of infatuation and possession, inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.

Becca
was the perfect girlfriend: smart, gorgeous, and loved by everyone at
New England’s premier boarding school, Thorn Abbey. But Becca’s dead.
And her boyfriend, Max, can’t get over his loss.

Then Tess
transfers to Thorn Abbey. She’s shy, insecure, and ordinary—everything
that Becca wasn’t. And despite her roommate’s warnings, she falls for
brooding Max.

Now Max finally has a reason to move on. Except it
won’t be easy. Because Becca may be gone, but she’s not quite ready to
let him go…

My Review

Having never read Rebecca, I did not know what to really expect with this book. Okay, to be more truthful, I did not even read the story synopsis before reading the book. But I was hooked...what can I say, I like a good boarding school book :)

I enjoyed Thorn Abbey. Was it the greatest book of all time? No, but I still enjoyed it. There were quite a few moments when I just couldn't stop reading because I needed to know what happened next. And the ending? O.O

Some parts of the story irked me though. For starters, Max's hot to cold feelings for Tess (newly enrolled to Thorn Abbey and not an upper-crust student like everyone else), Tess' roommate's personality. In the end, it all makes sense, but at the time it was a little frustrating.

Either way, enjoyable book. While it is modern day and slightly paranormalish, I'd call it a gothic novel. Give it a try if you're looking for a gothic novel or a simple retelling of Rebecca.
to Ginny and her readers and thanks for letting me drop in for this leg

exactly an extravaganza in the full meaning of the word, but it’s still

we’d snoop around the room of my heroine, Zenn, and see what we could
find out about her. So, I can tell you this much first: she’s 17, and
studying to be an exoveterinarian at an ancient cloister tucked into a
deep canyon on Mars. The cloister includes both a clinic and a training
facility that takes in a whole range of alien creatures that need
medical attention. Zenn is in her novice year of training, specializing
in very big, sometimes very hazardous-to-your-health animals. Her dorm
room is up on the second story of the calefactory building, basically a
meeting hall.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">We pause
outside her door. The hallway is lined with other doors, all closed, all
the other rooms empty except for the ones belonging to Hamish, the
cloister’s new sexton, and Sister Hild, one of Zenn’s instructors. Seems
the cloister school has fallen on hard times since the Rift cut off all
communication and trade between Mars and Earth. So, Zenn is now the
only student left at the school, which is run by her Uncle Otha, the
cloister’s director-abbot.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">We nudge
the door open and step inside. It’s a small room, simple, with a narrow
bunk, a desk littered with compu-shards, stacks of v-films and old-style
ink-on-paper books on a dizzying variety of subjects: the molecular
make-up of bloodcarn venom, the care and feeding of mega-fauna like
whalehounds and the brain chemistry of the Lithohippus indra,
vacuum-dwelling animals that have evolved the ability to move starships
between the stars. There’s a pile of what looks like playing cards. You
turn them over; each one appears to have an anatomical term on one
side, and its definition on the other. Flash cards. It sort of looks
like she may have been prepping for a big test of some sort. In any
case, this Zenn girl seems pretty focused on her studies.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

on the far wall is open, the scent of blossoming gensoy drifts in from
the cloister’s fields. Beneath the window is a battered, old soft-shell
backpack made of some strange kind of leather. This is Zenn’s vet field
kit; it used to belong to her Uncle Otha, but now it’s hers, and it’s
one of her most prized possessions. We rummage inside it, and find
medical equipment like a portable sedation-field generator, various
medications and bandages, some odd looking cylinders with
“Cryo-Crystalizer” and “Quadrobiotic Spray” printed on the outside.

wall is a bookshelf. Between even more reference books we find a few
odds and ends. In a worn, wooden frame, there’s a faded v-filmloop of
her mother. Mai Scarlett is a tall, slender woman with straight,
jet-black hair and a warm smile. She wears an exovet lab coat and waves
at the person holding the camera. Then she brandishes a rolled scroll,
her diploma. Although there is no sound, we see her laugh, she appears
triumphant and giddy. She’s just graduated from the cloister exovet
school and is on the verge of starting her career. It will not be a
long one. Zenn still misses her, even though she was lost years ago when
Zenn was only nine, during a risky medical procedure on a 700-foot-long
indra.

of paper catches our eye, protruding from between two books on the
shelf. It’s a note, badly smudged, badly spelled, from Liam Tucker. He’s
a towner boy, Zenn’s age, who has recently started spending a lot of
time at the cloister. He’s full of himself, has a bit of a reputation
regarding both trouble and girls. The paper, which Zenn kept after he
passed it to her several days ago, is a thank you note from Liam; the N
in thank you is written backwards. And it’s not Liam being ironic. Zenn
smiled and shook her head when she saw this. But she wasn’t laughing at
the boy. While most towners are suspicious of the cloister’s alien
animals, Liam has shown himself to be above this, appearing eager to
learn about the creatures Zenn spends most of her days with. The note is
simply thanking her for sharing what she knows with him, and she had to
smile at Liam for even thinking such a note was necessary. While Zenn
really doesn’t have much time for Liam and his questions and jokes, she
feels that his interest in the cloister’s menagerie of animals is a good
thing. Maybe he’ll tell other towners that the alien creatures aren’t
the “diseased, unclean monsters” that everyone in the nearby village of
Arsia City seems to think they are.

between a snort and a purr suddenly comes from somewhere behind the
desk. We stoop down. A pair of large, gold-green eyes blinks up at us.
It’s Katie, Zenn’s pet rikkaset. After a moment, she comes out into the
open and stretches her cat-sized, violet-and-cream striped body, whips
her long-haired plume-of-a-tail back and forth twice and sits. She’s
got a foxy-lynx-like face and black, raccoon-fingered paws. She’s deaf,
and now speaks to us using the sign language Zenn taught her: ‘Katie
hungry. And very! Have treat for Katie?’ There’s brown paper bag on top
of the bookshelf. You take out a dried grasshopper and offer it. Katie
snatches it quickly from your hand with one dexterous paw, hops up on
Zenn’s bed and crouches over her prize, chewing eagerly.

sound floats in through the open window, a sort of distant honk-growl.
It’s one of the resident Tanduan swamp sloos, a marine mammaloid the
length of a battleship. I ask if you’d like to go visit the sloo in her
treatment pool down at the other end of the cloister compound. You
glance around Zenn’s room and, deciding you’ve begun to understand a bit
about her life her at the cloister, agree that a visit to the sloo
sounds intriguing.

Margo McKenna has a plan for just about everything, from landing the
lead in her high school play to getting into a good college. So when she
finds herself in possession of a genie's ring and the chance to make
three wishes, she doesn't know what to do. Why should she put her life
into someone else's hands?

But Oliver is more than just a genie
-- he's also a sophomore at Margo's high school, and he's on the run
from a murderer. As he and Margo grow closer, she discovers that it
will take more than three wishes to save him.

A whole lot more.

From GoodReads:
You or your Alt? Only one will survive.
The
city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high.
Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and
citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their
twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job,
marriage—life.
Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a
fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will
have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep
shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer
certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a
future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running
not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the
power to destroy her.
Elsie Chapman's suspenseful YA debut weaves
unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and
thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will
begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and
every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.

In a world where babies are genetically engineered, they are made in twos. Each person has an alt, and each person must face and kill their alt. It's kill or be killed. The survivor is the stronger of the two, the one more fit to live in the world.
Children are taught how to kill and survive in school. There are actual classes for it. Until you kill your alt, you are not really a full member of society. It is encouraged to kill your alt, because if not, neither live.

Very interesting...

For West, things are going as planned, until something happens that shakes West to the core. When its time for her to kill her alt, she doesn't know if she can, or should. Instead, West goes out on her own and makes her own life.
I have mixed feelings about West. Don't get me wrong, I highly enjoyed the book. I read it in no time and am ready for Divided. I do have to say, I am very curious as to where the story will move along from here. But, I had issues with West. Here we have this girl that is so damn ready to get her assignment and kill her alt. She wants to go see friends kill their alts. She is all about it. And pissed that she can't have advanced weapon and combat training. She is a strong character. She knows who she is.
Then something happens...

And the West I liked fell apart. She becomes a renegade, not caring about herself or anyone else really. She loses it. I did not like this. I began to lose to respect for West. By the end of the book, some of it came back. I still liked her, I just didn't respect her as a character very much. And that could be the way it was intended. Where I feel West took the easy way out, the cheating way out, she would very much disagree. It is what it is. And a certain part of the story was over way too quickly. All of this intense lead up to have it end in no time. I was a little bummed about it.
She could have been stronger, but hey, that's my opinion. And I guess the story would have been quite different had West not done what she did...oh wow. Can't think too much on that, else my brain goes all nutso and I contemplate all of the actions of previous reads' characters... O.o
It may appear subtle, or it may punch you in the gut and take away all of your air. Either way, you are going to remember it, and you will remember it well!

For me, there have been two books that fit this bill. They are of a similar nature, but so so different in every single aspect except one. They are zombie books. The first is World War Z. The second is actually a series: The Newsflesh Series by Mira Grant. (I will save my World War Z thoughts for another post since I am planning to re-read it this week.)

Newsflesh begins with Feed, then Deadline, and finishes with Blackout. Never before has a zombie book/series taken me through a wide gamut of emotions. I've laughed, I've cried, I've raged, I've cringed, I've been scared shitless, I've been so frustrated I had to either skim the next few chapters or step away. I've also become cautious. All from a zombie book? Yes.

To set the story, Feed's premise, from GoodReads:

The year was 2014. We
had cured cancer. We had beaten the common cold. But in doing so we
created something new, something terrible that no one could stop. The
infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one,
unstoppable command: FEED. Now, twenty years after the Rising, bloggers
Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their
lives - the dark conspiracy behind the infected. The truth will get out,
even if it kills them.

Thus begins the emotional roller coaster for me.

One thing that I should point out to you is that while this is technically a zombie book...it's not. Yes, it is about the fallout from a zombie outbreak that destroyed most of the world. But Feed, and the subsequent books are just so much more than that. Ultimately, what you have is a good ole government conspiracy/coverup, psychological thriller, and scare-the-shit-outta-you-medical horror story. The actual amount of zombie in this series declines as the series goes on.

Why?

My thoughts is because, at its core, that is not what the series is about. It is about the truth. Uncovering the truth and not dying because of it. The nation has learned to mostly live with zombies. It is fairly easy to avoid if you follow rules and procedures, so why would it be the focus of the series. We are reading about the cause, not the effect. At least in my opinion.

Sadly, I do have to admit, my love for the series was a little let down by the end of Blackout. I do not like the way it ended at all. Not gonna give anything away, but I was a little let down.

Again, a snippet from GoodReads

With too much left to

agencies-

Zombie bears?! OH HELL YES!!!! Wait...wait...what? Seriously, an afterthought in an unpublished blog? What? No. No that can't be. Where is the story on this. I WANTED MORE ZOMBIE BEAR! Let.Down. Oh well. I got over it.

Regardless of a few let downs, fabulous book. Fabulous series. I'm kind of bummed it is over. I still devoured this book, and let schoolwork slide this week. OOPS!

But kudos to Mira Grant for not continuing a story and making it thin and ugh by the end. Our adventure with the After the End Times crew has come to an end...for now anyway....who knows what horrors the CDC has in store for the future. We just may be joining our journalists again.
From GoodReads: Sixteen-year-old Rayna
sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove
it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new
job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may
be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But
these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at
night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it.
Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the
hands of angels she can't admit to seeing?

When I first started reading A Shimmer of Angels, I was having a slightly difficult time getting hooked into the book. But I thought the premise was interesting. A sixteen year old girl who keeps getting thrown into mental hospitals because she sees people with wings? Hallucinations at that. So her family is trying to get her better.

Meanwhile, she gets out, things are going good, then it starts happening again. Coincidentally the same time students start killing themselves. Can it be related? And what about new boy Cam who shows up at the same time. No...no, it can't be related can it?

Well. Yesterday happened. And it happened that I was up until 2 am finishing this book! Wow. The story and world of Rayna just exploded and suddenly it was all I could do to stop reading and get on with housework, schoolwork, dinner, husband time, etc. Good lord, it has been a while since a book did this to me.

And as faithful readers will remember, I hate love triangles. Hate with a fiery passion. Did A Shimmer of Angels have a love triangle? You betcha. Did I hate it? Um...no >.> Yes, you read that correctly. Rayna is drawn to good boy Cam and bad boy Kade. And both are drawn to her. With one things could happen, with the other, it's off limits. So what to do? What to do? (Take the one things can happen with. He is sooo much more tasty imo!) Vague? Why yes it is, but I really don't want to spoil anything. But seriously, the love triangle was not annoying, it made sense even.

I'm looking forward to the next installment to see if any other characters make a re-appearance and possibly even will become more fleshed out. That's the only real complaint I had. We couldn't really connect with any of the background characters, so when they turned up dead, I wasn't that sad. Shocked yes; sad no. Plus, I just want more of the dark winged angel :D

Get yourself past the first three or four chapters and you are golden. Read it, devour it, enjoy it! Then come back and tell me what you think. From GoodReads:
Lenah Beaudonte should
be dead. But having sacrificed herself to save another, she finds
herself awakening with strange powers that are neither vampire nor
human—and a new enemy on her trail. In her vampire life, Lenah had
thought that being human was all she ever wanted; but the human heart
suffers pain, heartbreak and loss.

With her new powers growing
and the dark force of the Nex after her soul, Lenah faces a choice:
between the mortal love of gorgeous Justin, whose passion fed her human
soul, and taking a different path to become the mistress of her own
destiny, wherever that may lead..

Now, before I get into my review for Stolen Nights, I'd like to share my GoodReads review for Infinite Days way back in 2010:

One
of my fave vamp books ever! The story was catchy, the vamps were so
intriguing. I love the way they were done. I am so ready for Stolen
Nights! And the typical love triangle was not annoying, which was
fantastic. That whole angle is getting old imo.

Okay, so two things to note. First, I was completely enthralled by the story. I thought it was an original vampire story. Second, I was sick and damn tired of love triangles. Especially the annoying ones. One thing that cannot be seen by the review, two years was sooooooooooooo long to wait for book 2! UGH! I was dying waiting to see what would happen!

But I finally was able to get my hands on an ARC from NetGalley...even though I just read it. Oops. So without further ado, the review!

Even though two years had passed since the initial reading of Infinite Days, I was able to fall right back into the story and not lose too much of the story. Lenah, newly human is still adjusting to her life as a human when she is summoned by a group (gonna leave out the spoiler name) who gives her a choice-either remain human or go back to the 15th century and never become a vampire. If Lenah goes back, she will never again be able to see her lover Rhode. Is this a choice she is able to make?

Well, needless to say, she chooses present day life and all hell breaks loose. She has a vicious vampire after her. One who is hell bent on destroying Lenah's life and acquiring all of Lenah's power and thus becoming the new Vampire Queen. But is she strong enough to defeat Lenah who still has a few tricks up her sleeve? Through it all, twists and turns abound. But the end will leave you breathless and wanting more.

--
Okay. So while not quite as good as the first, I was still hooked. I actually forgot to eat lunch today because I just had to finish the book! And wow. Let's just say this was one of those rare times where the ending blew me away. I did not see it coming. And I was so happy and relieved because of it! I like surprises :)
And to see that the strange pieces in the novel all matched up in the end was even better. Everything was connected and nothing was left hanging. Which okay, maybe not always good...it does not appear that there will be a follow up. Unless....xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx That is totally a spoiler :P Just didn't want to give anything away, but I want to sooooo bad.

Okay, other than squeeing more over my love of this book, I think I will end this for now. But I do want to add that Stolen Nights is still up there in my favorite vamp series ever!

What's your favorite vampire series? And if you've read this book, Vicken? Rhode? Justin? Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11879561986885232666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4041014871443940591.post-7017786596849819862013-02-21T12:14:00.000-05:002013-02-21T12:14:54.218-05:00Bumped & Thumped ~ Megan McCaffertyTitle: Bumped
Published: April 2011
From Good Reads:
When a virus makes
everyone over the age of eighteen infertile, would-be parents pay teen
girls to conceive and give birth to their children, making teens the
most prized members of society. Girls sport fake baby bumps and the
school cafeteria stocks folic-acid-infused food.

Sixteen-year-old
identical twins Melody and Harmony were separated at birth and have
never met until the day Harmony shows up on Melody's doorstep. Up to
now, the twins have followed completely opposite paths. Melody has
scored an enviable conception contract with a couple called the Jaydens.
While they are searching for the perfect partner for Melody to bump
with, she is fighting her attraction to her best friend, Zen, who is way
too short for the job.

Harmony has spent her whole life in
Goodside, a religious community, preparing to be a wife and mother. She
believes her calling is to convince Melody that pregging for profit is a
sin. But Harmony has secrets of her own that she is running from.

When
Melody is finally matched with the world-famous, genetically flawless
Jondoe, both girls' lives are changed forever. A case of mistaken
identity takes them on a journey neither could have ever imagined, one
that makes Melody and Harmony realize they have so much more than just
DNA in common.

From New York Times bestselling author Megan
McCafferty comes a strikingly original look at friendship, love, and
sisterhood--in a future that is eerily believable

MY THOUGHTS:
I originally read this book as an ARC in 2011. And I instantly fell in love! I especially love the word 'Bumped.'

Melody and Harmony could
not be more than different from each other. One is a professional
pregger, the other is a Godfreak. Both want babies, but for different
reasons. Add in: a jilted lover, a would-be lover, crazy friends,
mistaken identities and you've got this awesome book.

It is a
scary thought though. Especially in a world where so many teens are
getting pregnant...could they one day be our salvation? God I hope not!

Pub Date: April 2012

From GoodReads:
It's been thirty-five
weeks since twin sisters Harmony and Melody went their separate ways.
Since then, their story has become irresistible to legions of girls:
twins separated at birth and living different lives, each due to deliver
sets of twins . . . on the same day! In a future where only teens can
"bump," or give birth, babies mean money, status, and freedom.

Married
to Ram and living in religious Goodside, Harmony spends her time trying
to fit back into the community she once loved and believed in. But she
can't seem to forget about Jondoe, the guy she fell in love with under
the strangest of circumstances.

To her adoring fans, Melody has
achieved everything she always wanted: a big, fat contract and a
coupling with Jondoe, the hottest bump prospect around. But this image
is costing her the one guy she really wants.

Cursed by their own
popularity, the girls are obsessively tracked by their millions of fans,
who have been eagerly counting down the days to their "Double Double
Due Date." Without a doubt, they are two of the most powerful teen girls
on the planet, and there's only one thing they could do that would make
them more famous than they already are:

Tell the truth

MY THOUGHTS:

I wasn't as into Thumped as I was Bumped. Don't get me wrong, still a much fun and enjoyable read. But this time, I felt more like I was being given a message than just reading for fun. And yes, that is part of this story, at least in my opinion.

Melody and Harmony both have HUGE decisions to make in regards to their bumps, and the rarely used "B" word. Baby. What will they do? In fact, the whole world is waiting and watching them. A set of twins having twins? This makes them The Hotties and very marketable and profitable. But at what cost?

And again, the scary part of this story is the close relation to the reality we have now. TV shows that capitalize and exploit teen moms? Come on...are we really that far away from this dystopian universe?

Anyway, fun book. Great ending to the duet! Definitely pick up the books if you get a chance.

Seventeen-year-old
Groundling, Fennel, is Sightless. She’s never been able to see her lush
forest home, but she knows its secrets. She knows how the shadows shift
when she passes under a canopy of trees. She knows how to hide in the
cool, damp caves when the Scourge comes. She knows how devious and
arrogant the Groundlings’ tree-dwelling neighbors, the Lofties, can be.

And she’s always known this day would come—the day she faces the Scourge alone.

The
Sightless, like Fenn, are mysteriously protected from the Scourge, the
gruesome creatures roaming the forests, reeking of festering flesh and
consuming anything—and anyone—living. A Sightless Groundling must brave
the Scourge and bring fresh water to the people of the forest. Today,
that task becomes Fenn’s.

Fenn
will have a Lofty Keeper, Peree, as her companion. Everyone knows the
Lofties wouldn’t hesitate to shoot an arrow through the back of an
unsuspecting Groundling like Fenn, but Peree seems different. A boy with
warm, rough hands who smells like summer, he is surprisingly kind and
thoughtful. Although Fenn knows his people are treacherous, she finds
herself wanting to trust him.

As
their forest community teeters on the brink of war, Fenn and Peree must
learn to work together to survive the Scourge and ensure their people’s
survival. But when Fenn uncovers a secret that shatters her truths,
she’s forced to decide who and what to protect—her people, her growing
love for Peree, or the elusive dream of lasting peace in the forest.
MY REVIEW:

I was more than pleasantly surprised with this book! From the first page I was hooked and had to keep reading. I was fascinated with Fenn. In such a scary climate, with the Scourge, and living in a forest, she must keep brave and gather water out among the Scourge. If she lets fear win, then both the Groundlings and Lofties go without water. And with this duty comes her Lofty Keeper-the person responsible for her safety while she is gathering water.

But what begins as friendship blossoms into something more. Especially when Fenn sets out to find safer water for her people. But in order to even help her community she must get the okay from The Three. The Three are the three elders chosen to essentially rule and lead their community. And of course there is one who is a jackass. Everytime I read a scene with him, my blood pressure went up lol!

The water quest opens Fenn's eyes to a world of truths, lies, deceptions, and love. Can she go back to how it was before after learning what she has? Can she go back to living in the forest floor with Peree up above?

I really enjoyed the characters, and their development, and in some cases their un-development. I liked how Fennel and Peree developed a friendship under not so great circumstances. But is there a love triangle you ask. Why yes, yes there is a love triangle. But guess what? The Scourge wins my Love Triangle Stamp of Approval. yay!

The entire time I read the book, I kept trying to place it in our known world. And for the life of me, I cannot do it! So kudos to A.G. Henley for completely transcending at least MY geographic recollection and making a whole new world in which to toss her characters! :D

Ugh I just loved this book! And I cannot wait for the next one in the series.I am so anxious to see where the characters go from here. And where their community goes after the first. I'd love to write up more in regards to the community, but without spoiling something, I'm just gonna leave it! I love me some 'zombie' books and The Scourge took it to a whole new level. Love it!

Nothi<var></var>ng ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie
knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil
fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she’ll finally get
out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham,
while she’s there.

What Ellie doesn’t anticipate is Graham’s
infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she
imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least
of all does she expect something powerful and ancient to awaken in her
and that strange whispers would urge Ellie to claim her place among
mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, there’s suddenly a
lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And
when Graham vanishes, it’s up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if
undeniably alluring Tuck—to uncover the truth about all
the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.

Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl’s unexpectedly-epic coming of age.

My Thoughts:

I loved this book! I found it to be a breath of fresh mythological air. Don't get me wrong, I adore me some Greek Mythology, but it is nice to read about Norse Mythology also! And come on...VALKYRIES! You just cannot beat that.

Ellie was a fun character. She is all but repressed by her older brother who thinks it is his life's mission to keep her in a bubble. But for a couple weeks in Norway she is free, until he shows up with his best friend Tucker.

Tucker. What to say about him?

/swoon?

Yes, that will work.

While in Norway visiting their grandmother, Ellie discovers that a lot of 18 year old boys are going missing. The rumor is that Valkyries are stealing them. But why? Can that even be true? Ellie learns first hand that not only is it true but she is one of them!

So yes, much awesomeness in this book. Bad-ass butt-kicking females. Fur lined boots of win, battles of mythological proportions. Oh and Loki. Can't forget to mention Loki!

Now, do yourself a favor and go out and read this book! You will not be disappointed.

From GoodReads:
A spine-tingling tale of steampunk and spies, intrigue and heart-racing romance!

When
Katharine Tulman's inheritance is called into question by the rumor
that her eccentric uncle is squandering away the family fortune, she is
sent to his estate to have him committed to an asylum. But instead of a
lunatic, Katharine discovers a genius inventor with his own set of
rules, who employs a village of nine hundred people rescued from the
workhouses of London.

Katharine is now torn between protecting
her own inheritance and preserving the peculiar community she grows to
care for deeply. And her choices are made even more complicated by a
handsome apprentice, a secretive student, and fears for her own sanity.

As
the mysteries of the estate begin to unravel, it is clear that not only
is her uncle's world at stake, but also the state of England as
Katharine knows it. With twists and turns at every corner, this
heart-racing adventure will captivate readers with its intrigue,
thrills, and romance.

The Dark Unwinding was one of those books in which I went in to it clueless. What do I mean? Well, it was new, a debut author, and had an interesting cover. So I picked it up from the library. But I honestly never read the jacket synopsis! I assume it was going to be steampunkish in nature. It kind of was, but it was also gothic. Either way, I enjoyed it!

There was a little bit of slowness at first for me, but once the story picked up (about a quarter into it) I was hooked. The story was fresh and entertaining. There was inventions, mystery, romance, and deception. But for poor Katharine, it isn't exactly a happy time. She is sent to the family estate to declare her wayward uncle a lunatic and have him committed. But once she arrives, Katharine realizes that things are not quite as they appear. If she declares her uncle she puts hundreds of people (including children) on the street. Is that something she is willing to do?

The more time she spends with her Uncle Tully and Lane, the more confused and conflicted she becomes. And then there is the matter of her "spells" she begins to experience. What exactly is going on at Strawnwyne Keep? And what is with her uncle who at the best of times acts like a child? And carries on with childlike rules and activities, yet who is an inventive genius.

Again, I enjoyed The Dark Unwinding very much. I had only one chief complaint. The family history/tree was confusing. I thought Uncle Tully was the husband of the aunt who sent Katharine on the 'mission.' But I was wrong, and I didn't realize it till much later in the book. Maybe it was just me, but I was sooo confused! lol
Luckily there was no real love triangle. There was nothing paranormal about the book, nothing fantastical. Honestly, it read more like a historical fiction piece than anything else, and it was honestly a breath of fresh air!

Highly enjoyable. Grab this one and give it a whirl!

So, my thoughts?

I am absolutely 100% in love with this book. I was hooked from the beginning and could not stop reading until I knew what happened to Nara & Ethan. First I found it intriguing that she dreamed her next day. (This also put me in mind of Cat Patrick's Forgotten, but totally NOT the same!) Nara has made a conscious decision not to change the course of the day's events...until that pesky bomb she dreamed. Then she had to say something. But of course, there are consequences. And not very nice consequences.

In the process she meets Ethan. Ethan is a mystery. No one knows much about him but of course, being high school-the rumors are FLYING! But he calms Nara, even when she stops having her dreams. And he always seems to be there to rescue her. Yes, rescue her. What the hell is going on with her life now? Suddenly with the appearance of Ethan, ravens, and the disappearance of her prophetic dreams, her life is at times in danger! O.o

So that's the story in a nutshell. There was no love triangle (thank you book gods), no life changing love match. Just a natural love interest. (Again thank you book gods.) Nara does not have a perfect life, despite knowing everything that goes on the next day. I'm happy to read that. yeah, that sounds odd, but perfect lives and predictability in books get old after a while.Luckily, I never got 'tired' of BKoD! Yay!

Now, do yourself a favor and go read the book! It does not disappoint. And while you're at it, go ahead and get Lucid. (Book 2) I could not wait to start it and had to immediately start on it!

I'm curious dear readers-if you were gifted with the chance to see your entire next day, would you alter event outcomes to your favor? To prevent someone getting hurt? To help a friend? Let me know in the comments!

[If you are a fan of the Final Destination movies, you will more than likely enjoy BKoD!]

I have been wanting to get my hands on this book since I first came across the Australian release. Finally got a chance to read it! Yay! So what did I think?

I melted.

Embrace won me over so completely I was shocked. It took me a few weeks to read the book, but not because of the story. I was (and in some ways still) going through some big stuff in my life. Many of the quotes used at each chapter heading were stinging me. They were and are wonderful quotations contained in Embrace.

One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.
-Sidney Howard

Plus, some of the storyline was hard to read while I was dealing with this crap. Violet, Phoenix, and Lincoln were never far from my mind though. And I did finish and wow! Immediately bought the next one for my Nook!

Violet Eden's world comes crashing down when she finds out she is faced with a very important decision on her seventeenth birthday: to Embrace or Not. Embrace what? Why that would be her angelic Grigori status of course! And then she'd be tasked with 'returning' exiles/fallen angels. The thing is, Violet doesn't want that life. Her friend, and person she trusted the most betrayed her in more ways than she can count.

Enter Phoenix. He became what Lincoln was to Violet. But at what cost to Violet? Which path will she choose now? Things start getting dicey as other exiles begin to sense and notice her and her super powers. So yeah, she's gotta do something and soon, else she's dead.

Needless to say. I loved the book. It was so easy to fall into the characters, into the world. Usually these types of angelic books irritate me to a degree. But wow, Embrace did not! I loved the history behind Grigori, Exiled, Fallen, etc. Secondary characters were well written and well rounded; they weren't just paper characters.

So.Much.Love.

And it must also be said, this was a love triangle that did not piss me off. I rather enjoyed it, and surprisingly I fell for the guy the reader probably isn't supposed to! [Phoenix] Are readers supposed to fall for the 'bad boys?' Or are we supposed to go for the one that the girl SHOULD go for? Hm.... What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
