A Shimmer of Angels ~ Lisa M. Basso

Title: A Shimmer of Angels
Series: Angel Sight
Author: Lisa M. Basso
Pub Date: Jan 29, 2013
Publisher: Month9Books
Page Count: 321
Author Website: http://lisa-basso.blogspot.com/
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
From GoodReads: Sixteen-year-old Rayna sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it. Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the hands of angels she can't admit to seeing?

When I first started reading A Shimmer of Angels, I was having a slightly difficult time getting hooked into the book. But I thought the premise was interesting. A sixteen year old girl who keeps getting thrown into mental hospitals because she sees people with wings? Hallucinations at that. So her family is trying to get her better.

Meanwhile, she gets out, things are going good, then it starts happening again. Coincidentally the same time students start killing themselves. Can it be related? And what about new boy Cam who shows up at the same time. No...no, it can't be related can it?

Well. Yesterday happened. And it happened that I was up until 2 am finishing this book! Wow. The story and world of Rayna just exploded and suddenly it was all I could do to stop reading and get on with housework, schoolwork, dinner, husband time, etc. Good lord, it has been a while since a book did this to me.

And as faithful readers will remember, I hate love triangles. Hate with a fiery passion. Did A Shimmer of Angels have a love triangle? You betcha. Did I hate it? Um...no >.> Yes, you read that correctly. Rayna is drawn to good boy Cam and bad boy Kade. And both are drawn to her. With one things could happen, with the other, it's off limits. So what to do? What to do? (Take the one things can happen with. He is sooo much more tasty imo!) Vague? Why yes it is, but I really don't want to spoil anything. But seriously, the love triangle was not annoying, it made sense even.

I'm looking forward to the next installment to see if any other characters make a re-appearance and possibly even will become more fleshed out. That's the only real complaint I had. We couldn't really connect with any of the background characters, so when they turned up dead, I wasn't that sad. Shocked yes; sad no. Plus, I just want more of the dark winged angel :D

Get yourself past the first three or four chapters and you are golden. Read it, devour it, enjoy it! Then come back and tell me what you think. After that you can join the 'dang it I have to wait till next year' club!

{Blog Tour} The Scourge by A.G. Henley

About The Scourge - Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, Smashwords

Seventeen-year-old Groundling, Fennel, is Sightless. She’s never been able to see her lush forest home, but she knows its secrets. She knows how the shadows shift when she passes under a canopy of trees. She knows how to hide in the cool, damp caves when the Scourge comes. She knows how devious and arrogant the Groundlings’ tree-dwelling neighbors, the Lofties, can be.
And she’s always known this day would come—the day she faces the Scourge alone.
The Sightless, like Fenn, are mysteriously protected from the Scourge, the gruesome creatures roaming the forests, reeking of festering flesh and consuming anything—and anyone—living. A Sightless Groundling must brave the Scourge and bring fresh water to the people of the forest. Today, that task becomes Fenn’s.
Fenn will have a Lofty Keeper, Peree, as her companion. Everyone knows the Lofties wouldn’t hesitate to shoot an arrow through the back of an unsuspecting Groundling like Fenn, but Peree seems different. A boy with warm, rough hands who smells like summer, he is surprisingly kind and thoughtful. Although Fenn knows his people are treacherous, she finds herself wanting to trust him.
As their forest community teeters on the brink of war, Fenn and Peree must learn to work together to survive the Scourge and ensure their people’s survival. But when Fenn uncovers a secret that shatters her truths, she’s forced to decide who and what to protect—her people, her growing love for Peree, or the elusive dream of lasting peace in the forest.

MY REVIEW:

I was more than pleasantly surprised with this book! From the first page I was hooked and had to keep reading. I was fascinated with Fenn. In such a scary climate, with the Scourge, and living in a forest, she must keep brave and gather water out among the Scourge. If she lets fear win, then both the Groundlings and Lofties go without water. And with this duty comes her Lofty Keeper-the person responsible for her safety while she is gathering water.

But what begins as friendship blossoms into something more. Especially when Fenn sets out to find safer water for her people. But in order to even help her community she must get the okay from The Three. The Three are the three elders chosen to essentially rule and lead their community. And of course there is one who is a jackass. Everytime I read a scene with him, my blood pressure went up lol!

The water quest opens Fenn's eyes to a world of truths, lies, deceptions, and love. Can she go back to how it was before after learning what she has? Can she go back to living in the forest floor with Peree up above?

I really enjoyed the characters, and their development, and in some cases their un-development. I liked how Fennel and Peree developed a friendship under not so great circumstances. But is there a love triangle you ask. Why yes, yes there is a love triangle. But guess what? The Scourge wins my Love Triangle Stamp of Approval. yay!

The entire time I read the book, I kept trying to place it in our known world. And for the life of me, I cannot do it! So kudos to A.G. Henley for completely transcending at least MY geographic recollection and making a whole new world in which to toss her characters! :D

Ugh I just loved this book! And I cannot wait for the next one in the series.I am so anxious to see where the characters go from here. And where their community goes after the first. I'd love to write up more in regards to the community, but without spoiling something, I'm just gonna leave it! I love me some 'zombie' books and The Scourge took it to a whole new level. Love it!

Embrace ~ Jessica Shirvington

 Title: Embrace
Series: The Violet Eden Chapters
Author: Jessica Shirvington
Pages: 369
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Author Website:

I have been wanting to get my hands on this book since I first came across the Australian release. Finally got a chance to read it! Yay! So what did I think?

I melted.

Embrace won me over so completely I was shocked. It took me a few weeks to read the book, but not because of the story. I was (and in some ways still) going through some big stuff in my life. Many of the quotes used at each chapter heading were stinging me. They were and are wonderful quotations contained in Embrace.
One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.
-Sidney Howard

Plus, some of the storyline was hard to read while I was dealing with this crap. Violet, Phoenix, and Lincoln were never far from my mind though. And I did finish and wow! Immediately bought the next one for my Nook!

Violet Eden's world comes crashing down when she finds out she is faced with a very important decision on her seventeenth birthday: to Embrace or Not. Embrace what? Why that would be her angelic Grigori status of course! And then she'd be tasked with 'returning' exiles/fallen angels. The thing is, Violet doesn't want that life. Her friend, and person she trusted the most betrayed her in more ways than she can count.

Enter Phoenix. He became what Lincoln was to Violet. But at what cost to Violet? Which path will she choose now? Things start getting dicey as other exiles begin to sense and notice her and her super powers. So yeah, she's gotta do something and soon, else she's dead.

Needless to say. I loved the book. It was so easy to fall into the characters, into the world. Usually these types of angelic books irritate me to a degree. But wow, Embrace did not! I loved the history behind Grigori, Exiled, Fallen, etc. Secondary characters were well written and well rounded; they weren't just paper characters.

So.Much.Love.

And it must also be said, this was a love triangle that did not piss me off. I rather enjoyed it, and surprisingly I fell for the guy the reader probably isn't supposed to! [Phoenix] Are readers supposed to fall for the 'bad boys?' Or are we supposed to go for the one that the girl SHOULD go for? Hm.... What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

The Body Finder Series ~ Kimberly Derting

The Body Finder debuted March 2010. It was originally recommended to me by a co-worker. So I read it and holy crap. My mind was blown. It was absolutely fantastic. The story was original, it was fresh, and it never let up.

From GoodReads: Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself.

What I loved the most about The Body Finder is that unlike most novels, Violet does not keep her "gift" to herself. She has a support system of her family and her friend Jay. This shocked me and I think is one reason I was drawn to the book. I get so tired of heroines who have a power/gift/ability and they A) hate it and wish they never had it or B) have no one to lean on and keep it to themselves to the point of destroying friendships, etc. So Violet is not a stupid girl. And I love it!

And then there is Jay. He has been friends with Violet since childhood. And she has realized she is in love with him. This is something else in novels that usually irks me. Usually the strong female becomes all gooey and simpering when a guy she loves enters the picture. But Violet didn't. Sure she was a little gooey around Jay but she wasn't annoying. It was sweet. It was natural. It was Violet & Jay. It was nice :)

We come now to book 2: Desires of the Dead.
GoodReads: Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.

As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger

So things are heating up. Violet and Jay are official. There is a new friend in the mix and Violet is targeted by the FBI. Is this good or bad? Violet finds a murdered child, and begins to receive threatening messages from a killer.
To be honest, Violet was not my favorite in this book. It was like she second guessed herself too much. But that is okay. Why? Because next comes

Book 3: The Last Echo which, holy crap, blew books 1 and 2 way out of the water! Starting off, I had trouble getting sunk into the book, but only because of past experience in my life with one of the character's names. But once I got over that BAM! I literally stayed up to 2am reading the book. I could not stop. And more than a couple times I got a little creeped out sitting in the near dark.

From GoodReads: In the end, all that’s left is an echo.

Violet kept her morbid ability to sense dead bodies a secret from everyone except her family and her childhood-best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay Heaton. That is until forensic psychologist Sara Priest discovered Violet’s talent and invited her to use her gift to track down murderers. Now, as she works with an eclectic group of individuals—including mysterious and dangerously attractive Rafe—it’s Violet’s job to help those who have been murdered by bringing their killers to justice.

When Violet discovers the body of a college girl killed by “the girlfriend collector” she is determined to solve the case. But now the serial killer is on the lookout for a new “relationship” and Violet may have caught his eye...

The Last Echo was chock full of suspense and even a MINOR love triangle. But yay, I was not bothered by it at all. It fit the story beautifully and Violet did not let me down. We also are introduced to Violet's new team of psychics. They were fun to get to know, and even more fun was learning about their individual gifts. And all of their gifts intertwined and worked together to solve murders, etc.

Be prepared have your socks knocked off. The ending is frikking amazing and now I am so excited to see where Violet's story will go in Dead Silence.

And after finishing book 3, I have come to a conclusion. Kimberly Derting is a master of psychological ickiness. Yes, I'm referring to the interludes provided by the serial killers. Love it! And a nod to the cover designer-I don't know if they read an advance version of the book, or if it was requested, but I love how the lavender flower fits in with the story. Genius cover imo.

Possession ~ Elana Johnson

Title: Possession
Author: Elana Johnson
Pub Date: June 7, 2011
Publisher: Simon Pulse
405 pages (hardcover)
Author website: http://elanajohnson.blogspot.com/

From GoodReads:
Toe the line between rule-following and rule-breaking in this tense and twisted start to a smart and sexy dystopian trilogy. Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.     But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them….starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous—everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.     This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play

Oh em gee. First off, 5 out of 5. I don't typically rate books on the blog, so this means something! lol Possession completely blew me away. It was not what I was expecting-and in fact it far exceeded my expectations.

As far a non-post-apocalypse dystopian story goes, I found Possession to be one of the more interesting ones. Johnson has created an entire world complete with lands, vocabulary, an underground rebellion movement, etc.

To start, there are two distinct groups of society members, and they live in two different areas. First is the Goodgrounds and the Goodies; and the Badlands and Baddies. But what makes Baddies bad? Well, they are tanned and have crazy hair! Apparently, Violet Schoenfeld is about to find out. Vi is a Rulebreaker and for her latest rulebreaking (walking with a boy after dark) she is going to be shipped off to the Badlands.

Thus begins Vi's journey with Baddie Jag Barque. And from that point on discovers her life is not what she thought, and not quite as simple. There is also more to the story of her dead sister and missing father. Will Vi be strong enough to withstand all of these new discoveries?

I absolutely ADORED Vi! She has such a fabulous voice, and kind of reminds me of how I talk to family and friends O.o Vi is a sarcastic, smart ass, semi-violent (but in a good way) girl. Even knowing it is going to bite her in the ass she can't hold her tongue.
"Yeah, the biting-my-tongue-thing only happened once in a lifetime, and I'd just used my quota."
The best dialogue in the book occurs between Vi and Jag. Between them, it's the important things that matter: "You think X is cute?" Yes-let's not focus on anything else but that single comment. Love it!

Oh, and there is also a love triangle. Guess what? I like this one! I know, two for two this week! There is Jag-Mr. Baddie himself. My first impression of Jag was not high. I was hoping he was a low rank character. Happily I admit he was not. He is a good guy, who is sensitive and just utterly in love with Vi. Then there is Zenn. He is Vi's matched. But there is something off about him. Could it be that he is Special Forces? Or is it something else? Yeah, not a fan of his, at all.

Okay, that is about all of the story I am going to share. I don't want to spoil anything because Possession is chock full of super-secret-shockers!

And now your Vocabulary Lesson, compiled by moi so it is not complete or whatever.
  • Thinkers: Persuasive people who control minds "the ones who broadcast the transmissions and categorize the people"
  • Control: gifts some people have, gifts that allow them to well, control things
  • Controlled: Basically, you're brainwashed or someone is making you do something with their mind!
  • the Green: Fancy name for Thinkers
  • Rangers: High ranking society members. Different types of rangers, all are top of class, smart, etc
  • Free Thinker: a person who cannot be controlled and thinks for themself

And some places mentioned in the book:
  • City of Water
  • Badlands
  • Fire Region
  • Centrals
  • Goodgrounds
  • Southern Rim
  • Freedom -NOT the place to be!
  • Seaside-where you can be free!
So, there you have it. Possession by Elana Johnson. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy! And then go read Surrender, book two. This is my next goal! I need to see what happens next!!

"We never let go of the ones we lose."

If you lived in Vi's world, do you think you would be a Goodie, or a Baddie? Would you want to be a Free Thinker or Controlled?

Throne of Glass ~ Sarah J. Maas

US
Title: Throne of Glass
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Pub Date: August 7, 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Author Website: http://sarahjmaas.com/
416 pages

From GoodReads:
After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men—thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the kings council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

"Princes are not supposed to be handsome! They're sniveling, stupid, repulsive creatures! This one...this...How unfair of him to be royal and beautiful."

Celaena is stuck in the middle of the dreaded love triangle. As much as I hate them, I actually found this one to be okay. There was a subtlety in the way the Captain of the Guard, Chaol, and Celaena feel for each other. Neither one is overt, neither gives much thought to it. Then we have Prince Dorian who is obvious; in fact many people around him suspect his feelings. And it seems that our assassin feels the same...

As far as the love interests go, I have nothing invested in Chaol as a character. But Dorian? Try as I might I am falling for him. And he is NOT my book crush type AT ALL! Typically it would be Chaol. As you can see, I am very confused by this turn of events!

The supporting cast for the most part was enjoyable. I wish we could have more about Nehemia. Nehemia is a visiting Princess, she and Celaena become friends and end up helping each other more than they realize. For me, she was the most interesting character. I truly hope we have more with her later on...maybe even her own book!

Overall, I enjoyed the story. My attention and curiosity were piqued throughout the entirety. Not once did I pick up another novel to read in between. (Yes, I have a bad habit of doubling up on books.) I love the initial premise. But there was something about the premise that bothered me. The King is looking for his Champion. So he devises a series of tests to weed out those not worthy, to end with a duel. Okay, that's all well and good. But, why is he testing criminals? There are assassins, thieves, brutes, etc. Not one single "good" person in the mix. That irritated me for some reason. Who knows, maybe the King has some nefarious purpose coming up that would require a criminal.

My biggest issue with Throne of Glass came at the end of the book. I am still puzzled over it two days later.
"All the clothing Celaena planned to buy when she was free to venture into Rifthold and do some shopping for herself..."
I'm sorry, but what the hell?! First off, Celaena never acted like a woman who was into shopping, or clothes in general. And there is the issue with the use of the word "shopping." While this is a fantasy book, it also has a historical feel to it. And in that sense, would a castle resident really go out to shop? Would they even use the word? Wouldn't there be a tailor that came by to personalize the clothing? This one phrase completely broke the aura of the novel for me.

Anyway, with the exception of those two issues, I highly enjoyed this book! And I am so ready for the sequel! And to leave you, here is the UK cover of so prettiness! Which cover is your favorite?

So, I have also added Google Friend Connect in the upper left of the blog. Feel free to friend me there-one is such a lonely number :P

Something Strange and Deadly ~ Susan Dennard

Pub Date: July 24
Publisher: HarperTEEN
Pages: 400
Author website: http://susandennard.com/
Review copy provided by: Edelweiss & publisher

Top 3 Reasons I was a goner for Something Strange and Deadly.

  1. The first sentence
  2. There was a "Dead Alarm"
  3. Coffin bells. But instead of the bells alerting the public to accidental living persons being buried, they warn against the awakening of the dead!
And this was all on the first page of the digital ARC!

Okay, so the story picks up with Eleanor's brother, who was supposed to be on a train coming home to Philadelphia. But he never showed up. Instead, the Dead did. Now, enlisting the help of the Spirit-Hunters, Eleanor is determined to find her brother, who must somehow be mixed up with a Necromancer. The Necromancer who is bringing all of these dead to life. And while we're at it, a mean spirit is chasing Eleanor!

On top of this, the year is 1876 and Eleanor is a woman. Unfortunately for her, she is expected to act a certain way. Her mother expects her to woo eligible bachelor Clarence Wilcox. Her friends expect her to have money and keep up with the latest fads. Eleanor knows that she doesn't want to rescue her family financially by marriage. Even the Spirit-Hunters treat her differently because she is a female in society. Everyone except Jie. Jie opens Eleanor's eyes to the fact that just because she is a woman, it doesn't mean she should act or be a certain way.

One key conversation between the two compares foot-binding to wearing a corset. Both confine and conform women into an acceptable standard. Both are, as Eleanor feels, barbaric. And thus, Eleanor begins to question her role.

Back to the main story plot! They mystery continues as young men turn up dead-decapitated in fact. Eleanor's nerves are on end because they are connected to her brother, who is STILL missing. Will he turn up as the next victim? And there is something going on with Clarence, who is constantly calling on her. And something is going on with Daniel-one of the Spirit-Hunters. (Daniel = dopey smiley faces)

Gah! I just loved this book! I did not want to stop reading, even when I had to. And the ending? Holy crap. I was blown away by it, as was Scott (the husband) who exclaimed to me, "The author did X at the end of the book? Who does that?!"

"He dropped to one knee and bowed his head. He was declaring fealty to his empress."

BLOWN AWAY. Did I mention that?

Absolutely wonderful. One of my favorite 2012 debuts. The characters were fun, felt real, and easy to relate to. Each character felt different, with their own personality. From gentlemanly to prickly, to snobbish to ditzy. It was all unique. When Eleanor hurt, I hurt. When she loved, I loved. When she was shoved into a corset, thankfully I was not!

So. Your task for July 24th is to go get a copy of Something Strange and Deadly from Susan Dennard! Then come back and tell me what you thought!

And now, for something fun and exciting...A scavenger hunt, brought to you by Susan Dennard. And once you finish the hunt you will be taken to the super fun book trailer! (The trailer will go public soon, so this is a sneak peek :P ) Something Strange and Deadly website and scavenger hunt.
And remember:

A Beautiful Dark ~ Jocelyn Davies

Title: A Beautiful Dark
Author: Jocelyn Davies
Pub Date: September 2011
Publisher: HarperTEEN
390 pages
Author website: www.jocelyndavies.com

From GoodReads:
On the night of Skye's seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers. Complete opposites—like fire and ice—Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Their sudden appearance sends Skye's life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move—only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.

In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.

Son of a.....cliffhanger?!
What the...so mean!
Seriously though, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and now I am eagerly waiting for September. So many good books coming out in September!

What did this book have that made it stand out to me?

  • A love triangle/quadrangle that did not make me want to puke
  • Non-ridiculous names for angelic/demonic/new guys (I am also a huge fan of the name Ash/Asher)
  • A lead female who didn't piss me off
  • Lead female who when faced with the possibility that she is 'different' doesn't go in to a total meltdown-only a mild one
  • She stands up for herself

These are just a few of the things that made me fall for A Beautiful Dark. I enjoyed that strange things happen around Skye, but she chalks it up to freak occurrences. But yet on the same hand she tries to make it happen again. And on top of that, I adore her best friend Cassie. She is just too cute!

With so many explosive discoveries what will happen with Skye?

"You don't have a heartbeat," I realized
"Does that bother you?" he asked.
"No," I thought for a minute. "As long as you can feel things and care about things."
"It's a misconception that you need a heart to love," he whispered into my hair.

Oh how I love that last line.
